Nationals MPs have cooked dinner for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of seriously ill children from country WA in Perth for treatment.
Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies joined her fellow Nationals MPs and staff to cook dinner, tour the state-of-the-art facility and join residents for dinner.
Ronald McDonald House includes 47 family rooms, accommodating up to 220 people each night. It has the potential to help more than 800 families from across regional WA each year at no cost to them.
When families have to travel far from home to obtain specialist medical care for their sick child, securing accommodation in an unfamiliar place adds to their stress and anxiety.
It can also add enormous financial pressure to families already stretched to the limit by medical bills and associated costs.
Ms Davies said the new facility was a vast improvement on the old house in Subiaco and had been funded by Lotterywest and Royalties for Regions, along with generous donations from many corporate and private citizens.
“Contributing $5 million dollars from Royalties for Regions was one of the best decisions The Nationals in Government made. It offers a vital service for families experiencing a tough time with their sick or injured kids,” she said.
Member for the Agricultural Region Hon Martin Aldridge said they’d had a great afternoon cooking dinner for the residents and then joined them for a chat afterwards.
“Ronald McDonald House helps ease that pressure by providing accommodation to families at no cost near their child’s hospital for as long as they need it – days, weeks, months or years,” he said.
